The Terror Abridged
I’ve wanted to adapt a series for a while, and I chose “The Terror” because it would be a different kind of challenge. My first two projects addressed questionable decisions from the source material. With “The Terror,” I already like the source material – but it’s still eight hours of complex and often bleak content. I thought I might be able to create a more digestible alternative and perhaps assist the creative force behind it with reaching a larger audience.
Edits
A traditional list of edits would be impractical, but here’s a summary of the scope:
- Preserves the core plot and major character development
- Clarifies the timeline with additional time stamps estimated from contextual hints
- Focuses on the present setting by removing all flashbacks and other scenes in England
- Removes the majority of episode 6 (“A Mercy”), because it’s mostly unnecessary to advance the plot
- Although primarily to reduce the runtime, the ending’s -slightly- less bleak by design (see below)
- Focuses on the officers, while most of the crew functions as a composite plot device
- Context may suggest but doesn’t always explain history between characters, such as Captains Franklin and Crozier
- Some relationships may be simplified; for example, Mr. Goodsir and Lady Silence appear to be close but share relatively few scenes
- Some characters disappear without resolution, presumed to die offscreen
- (Although it might sound like a negative, the series already features a surplus of characters, and often with indistinct appearances or personalities. Plus, it’s unavoidable with my aggressive runtime objective.)
